The three December wine club selections are as follows:

Alternative Cheer 6-pack @ R945.00

A selection of a few ‘left of centre’ and so-called ‘natural’ wines – they may or may not be fruity, they may or  may not be cloudy, they may or may not contain a harmless sediment……. they will open your mind & get your taste-buds clapping.

This pack contains:
Arcangeli Verdelho (Botriver) made by Krige Visser. 88% whole bunch pressed, settled in tank and racked to barrel for natural fermentation (with malo). 12% crushed and destemmed and also fermented in older barrels. Mineral & saline with a full, complex palate. Please do not serve too cold & give it time to open up. Scallops on the menu??
Mother Rock White (Swartland) made by Johan Meyer. Chenin Blanc, Viognier, Semillon, Grenache Blanc & Harslevelu all fermented with natural yeasts. No additives and as you can see, it’s not crystal clear. Tastes like wine. Really good juice!
Craven Clairette Blanche (Stellenbosch) by Mick and Jeanine Craven. One portion is whole bunch pressed to old neutral barrels for fermentation (natural). The rest is destemmed and fermented in stainless steel on the skins. The wine is pumped over during fermentaion then (after about 10days) pressed to old neutral barrels for maturation. Before bottling, the two components are blended together (60% skin fermented and 40% whole bunch press). Crunchy yellow fruit with a soft, rounded palate and mouth-watering finish.
Elemental Bob Cinsaut/Pinot Noir by Craig Sheard. Serve slightly chilled. A delicious medium-bodied wine showing notes of black berry with floral notes.
Thirst Gamay Noir by Radford Dale (Stellenbosch). Whole-bunch carbonic maceration then the grapes were basket-pressed resulting in a wonderfully perfumed fruit expression. No oak used at all. Vibrant red fruits. Seriously ‘smashable’ Serve chilled.
Smiley Red NV v3 (Swartland) 50% cinsaut with mourvedre, tinta barocca & syrah. Natural fermentation in a combination of stainless steel tank and well-seasoned wood foudres. The Syrah and Mourvedre were partially de-stemmed with a medium length maceration before ageing in seasoned oak barrel while the Cinsault and Tinta Barocca were fermented as whole clusters and aged in stainless steel to preserve the fresh and bright fruit. The separate wines are tasted and then blended. Soft, rounded palate. Concentrated dark fruit, spice and herbs. Serve slightly chilled.

White six-pack @ R730.00

Focal Point Chardonnay by Arco Laarman. Grapes sourced from Vermaaklikheid. Whole-bunch pressed, a portion of the juice went directly into barrel without settling, while the remainder of the juice was settled for two days before being put to barrel. Natural fermentation in new and neutral barrels. Matured for 10 months. Refreshingly crisp, but multi-dimensional, this intricate wine envelops the palate with voluminous texture.
Glenwood Sauvignon Blanc/Semillon (Franschoek). An unwooded 50/50 blend of these two classics. 7 months lees contact adds richness and weight. Delicious! A great buy.
The Freshman by Rianie Strydom. Vibrant and fresh without being zippy, this is a well-balanced, sleek Sauvignon Blanc
Alvi’s Drift Chardonnay is a lightly wooded wine with hints of citrus. Well-balanced with a delicate, creamy finish.
Olifantsberg Chenin Blanc is crisp and refreshing. The mid-palate has some weight, but this is balanced by firm,  natural acidity on the finish.
Morgenster Vespri Vermentino is a more-ish local expression of this Italian grape. Yellow fruit and herbs with a refreshing feel.

Red six-pack @ R888.00

Cluster Cabernet Sauvignon by Arco Laarman (Stellenbosch / Paarl) . On the nose, primary red fruits including blueberries and blackberries, with a hint of anise. The palate is clean and elegant with dark chocolate and cherry fruits. The tannins on the finish are very soft.
Kloovenburg Carignan (Swartland) is a medium bodied, juicy, berry-loaded wine with hints of fynbos and liquorice. Soft tannins and fresh acidity. Chill slightly.
Dabar Pinot Noir (Napier) is a deal of note. We  suggest you stock up while it’s available. Balanced, medium body with soft tannins. Hints of forest floor, floral notes. Serve slightly chilled
Parquet by Carsten Migliarina is a blend of Syrah / Carignan / Grenache . Although still young (only 2016) it is accessible now. Red berry and spice with a fresh finish. Will develop, so set some aside if you can.
TSW Syrah (Swartland) by Trizanne Barnard. Black plum, mulberry and spice. This is such a pleasure. Bring on the rump
